how to care after wisdom teeth are removed

Category:

It is not necessary to remove the wisdom tooth but when the third molars start to affect your oral health, having it removed can benefit you in the long run. Once your wisdom tooth is extracted, it could take up to two weeks for the extracted area to completely heal. Doing these aftercare procedures can help it to heal as quickly as possible.

Recovery from a wisdom tooth removal will be gradual. The recovery time will depend on the condition of the person and the type of extraction performed on the patient. For example, some wisdom teeth extractions might need stitches to help close the wound. In this case, the recovery time will take a week longer than normal.

After the extraction, a blood clot will form where your teeth used to be. Your dentist will speed up the clotting process by putting a gauze that you’ll bite on to keep the area dry and promote blood clot. This will take from 30 to 45 minutes. Once formed, it’s advised not to poke into that area or do things that could possibly destroy the clot. This is why dentists normally advise avoiding hard or chewy foods so the clot will remain undisturbed.

Stop Bleeding

It is normal to ooze blood at 24 up to 48 hours after the wisdom tooth extraction. However, if there is excessive bleeding, you can do the following:

Reposition the gauze as the position may not be enough to put pressure on the extracted site.

Sit upright and avoid any strenuous activity.

Use a new set of ice packs and bite the gauze for one hour.

If bleeding persists despite the procedures done above, contact your dentist immediately.

Caring for Your Mouth

At least 24 hours after the extraction, rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution. This is shown to help promote the healing process and minimize complications.

Be careful when brushing or flossing your teeth. Do your best to avoid direct contact with the extraction site. If you have stitches, take care and avoid it when you brush. Never skip oral hygiene during this time as the bacteria buildup could cause infection.

Do not take part in any strenuous physical activity an intense physical activity could increase the blood pressure; thus, increased bleeding. Rest and allow your body to heal for a few days.

Diet

Do not drink nor smoke. The consumption of alcohol heavily affects how your wound heals. The sucking motion of smoking can dislodge the clot and could hamper the healing process. Smoking also reduces blood supply in the area which results in delayed healing time.

Eat only soft foods. Soft foods like eggs mashed potatoes, gelatine are highly recommended. Fruits, veggies, and meats are ok as long as they are liquefied in a blender.

To avoid dislodging the blood clot, do not drink carbonated water or eat foods that could leave particles in your teeth like peanuts, popcorn, etc.

Medications

Take the pain medicine, antibiotics and other medications as prescribed by your dentist. If you are taking strong medications you are advised not to operate heavy machinery or even drive.
