Post-Operative Instructions for Wisdom Teeth Removal

Home » Post-Operative Instructions for Wisdom Teeth Removal

We commend you on successfully undergoing your wisdom teeth removal procedure. It is crucial to follow these post-operative instructions to ensure a smooth and swift recovery.

Our team is committed to providing you with comprehensive care and support during this healing period.

Bleeding

Some bleeding is normal within the first 24 hours. Use the gauze pads we provided, changing them as necessary, and biting down gently to maintain pressure. If bleeding persists or is heavy, you can use a moistened tea bag placed on the area for 30 minutes, as the tannic acid helps form a clot.

Swelling

Swelling is a normal response and can be minimized with ice packs applied to the cheek area for 20 minutes on, followed by 20 minutes off. Continue this cycle as you feel necessary during the first 48 hours post-surgery.

Pain Management

You will likely experience some discomfort as the anesthesia wears off. We may prescribe pain medication or recommend over-the-counter options such as Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen. Follow the dosage instructions carefully.

Oral Hygiene

Do not rinse your mouth or brush your teeth for the first 24 hours. After this period, gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt in a cup of water) several times a day, especially after eating, to keep the area clean. You may then brush your teeth, being extremely careful around the surgical sites.

Diet

Start with a liquid or soft diet immediately after wisdom teeth removal. Foods like soup, yogurt, applesauce, and mashed potatoes will be gentle on your surgery sites. Avoid using a straw for the first few days, as the suction can dislodge the blood clots that form in the extraction sites, leading to a dry socket.

Rest

Limit your activities for the next few days. Resting helps your body to heal. Avoid strenuous activities for at least a week, as it can increase bleeding and swelling.

Smoking and Alcohol

Avoid smoking for as long as possible post-surgery, as it can delay healing and increase the risk of complications. Also, abstain from alcohol for at least 48 hours.

Do Not Disturb

Avoid touching the area with your tongue or fingers, and do not spit forcefully. These actions can disturb the clot formation, which is essential for healing.

Dry Socket

If you experience a significant increase in pain after 2-3 days, which does not improve with pain medication, you may have a dry socket. Please contact us immediately for treatment.

Follow-Up

If sutures were placed and they are not self-dissolving, we will schedule a follow-up appointment for their removal. Please attend all scheduled post-operative appointments so we can monitor your healing.

Emergency Contact

Should you experience excessive bleeding, severe pain, swelling that worsens after a few days, or any signs of infection (fever, pus, foul taste), contact our dental office immediately.

Your recovery and comfort are our highest priorities. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns during your healing process. Remember, following these instructions closely will help ensure a faster and more comfortable recovery.
